چکیده

Some consequences of uncertainties in radiobiological risk due to galactic cosmic ray (GCR) exposure are analyzed for their e ect on engineering designs for the rst lunar outpost and a mission to explore Mars. This report presents the plausible e ect of biological uncertainties , the design changes necessary to reduce the uncertainties to acceptable levels for a safe mission, and an evaluation of the mission redesign cost. Estimates of the amount of shield mass required to compensate for radiobiological uncertainty are given for a simpli ed vehicle and habitat. The additional amount of shield mass required to provide a safety factor for uncertainty compensation is calculated from the expected response to GCR exposure. The amount of shield mass greatly increases in the estimated range of biological uncertainty, thus escalating the estimated cost of the mission. The estimates are used as a quantitative example for the cost e ectiveness of research in radiation biophysics and radiation physics.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ISRU-BASED TRANSPORTATION ARCHITECTURES FOR THE MOON AND MARS: LOX/LH2 vs. LOX/Methane

Introduction: Space exploration missions are dependent on large vehicles launched from Earth even when the payloads are small. Even though staging would increae the efficiency of missions to other planets and celectial bodies, the massive launch vehicles needed for the completion of such missions make them practically infeasible. If propellants can be produced and stored on the Moon, Mars, etc....

Radiation Effects and Shielding Requirements in Human Missions to the Moon and Mars

Background: Radiation in space poses a threat to humans embarked on missions to the Moon or Mars. Several studies deal with allowable doses, levels of radiation doses in space, and effects of various forms of shielding. The recent shift in emphasis from "point estimates" to 95% confidence intervals adds significantly to the challenge in designing human space missions. Recent reports issued by N...

Psychological Factors Associated with Habitat Design for Planetary Mission Simulators

Knowledge and experience of human and technological problems on long-duration missions to Moon and Mars, is at best minimal or worst-case non-existent, as these expeditions are yet to be undertaken. Problems stemming from isolation, inter-group relationships, human response to and interaction with spacecraft interiors in a confined isolated environment have been studied, but in limited ways. On...

Space Transportation Infrastructure Supported By Propellant Depots

A space transportation infrastructure is described that utilizes propellant depots to support all foreseeable missions in the Earth-Moon vicinity and deep space out to Mars. The infrastructure utilizes current expendable launch vehicles such as the Delta IV Heavy, Atlas V, and Falcon 9, for all crew, cargo, and propellant launches to orbit. Propellant launches are made to a Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO...

Venus, Mars, and the ices on Mercury and the moon: astrobiological implications and proposed mission designs.

Venus and Mars likely had liquid water bodies on their surface early in the Solar System history. The surfaces of Venus and Mars are presently not a suitable habitat for life, but reservoirs of liquid water remain in the atmosphere of Venus and the subsurface of Mars, and with it also the possibility of microbial life. Microbial organisms may have adapted to live in these ecological niches by t...
